Music fans at Fenway Park for the Red Sox home opener were treated to a surprise announcement by singer Neil Diamond, Boston station WCVB reported.

During the eighth-inning sing-along of music icon Diamond's classic "Sweet Caroline" -- a longtime Fenway Park tradition -- Diamond made an appearance in a televised, big-screen broadcast. He told fans that he would be performing live in concert at Fenway on Saturday, Aug. 23, as part of his 2008 World Tour.

Since 1997, Diamond’s 1969 hit "Sweet Caroline" has been pumped from the speakers at Fenway Park during every Red Sox home game. Since 2002, it has become a tradition in the middle of the eighth inning and embraced by Red Sox Nation.

Ticket information for Diamond’s show at Fenway Park will be announced on the singer's Web site.
