Professor Wrestling: 'Victory Road' Results

Angle, Joe, Team 3D In 'Match Of Champions'

Listen up!

Class is in session.

Podcast: Episode 37

After a week off, it's back to work as we review Sunday's TNA pay-per-view, "Victory Road." The main event was something called "The Match Of Champions." Sounds intriguing, but perhaps a bit too gimmicky. More on that later, but first, what happened on the undercard:

Challenge Match: Eric Young and Gail Kim vs. Robert Roode and Ms. Brooks
What Should Happen: Can I just say that I shouldn't have to pay for mixed tag matches? Please? I hate to be cranky off the bat, but I think I've seen this 100 times on free TV already. What should happen? Eric Young should win, cementing his independence from his former heel boss, Roode.

What Will Happen: I'm going with the babyface team of Young and Kim.

What Did Happen: Young and Kim won the mixed tag battle.

Challenge Match: Rhino vs. James Storm
What Should Happen: Cowboy Storm tossed beer at Rhino recently. Rhino, a recovering alcoholic, didn't take kindly to it -- and that's why these guys are scrapping. What should happen? Bad things for the cowboy.

What Will Happen: It doesn't seem as if Rhino has won too many PPV matches recently. I say he takes this one.

What Did Happen: Storm hit Rhino with a beer bottle to win. Then he poured beer down his throat. A true heel.

Challenge Match: Christian Cage vs. Chris Harris
What Should Happen: Harris foiled Cage's attempt to win the TNA title at the last PPV, and Christian wants payback. I say let these two go overtime because they're both pretty talented, and can tell a good story in the ring. Cage should win, though, if the plan is to keep him in the heavyweight title hunt.

What Will Happen: Cage will take it, pinning Harris cleanly.

What Did Happen: Cage won it, but only with help from Dustin Rhodes, the former Goldust.

Challenge Match: Sting and Abyss vs. Tyson Tomko and A.J. Styles
What Should Happen: This looks like a fun little match with nothing really on the line. If it were up to me, I'd have A.J. Styles get the pin over Abyss. That way, Sting doesn't look weak if his team loses. Of the four, only Styles has any ring presence -- but Sting can still tell a story. I'm not too keen on Abyss or Tomko. Maybe they can show me something here.

What Will Happen: I like the heel team of Styles and Tomko to take it.

What Did Happen: Abyss pinned Tomko for the win. Babyfaces prevailed.

Match Of Champions: Kurt Angle and Samoa Joe vs. Team 3D
What Should Happen: Bear with me. This is pretty convoluted. Angle is the TNA World champion. Joe is the TNA X-Division champion. Team 3D, the former Dudley Boys, are the TNA Tag Team champions. If Angle or Joe gets the pin, they win the tag belts -- and get to pick their partner. If a member of team 3D makes the winning pin, that performer wins the belt of whichever wrestler they pin. Uh, news flash, kids: Team 3D won't win this. Samoa Joe will win -- that's the only thing that makes sense. Angle is too busy defending the World title, and since the X-Division crown is a lesser title, Joe can justify doing double duty. At least, that's how I'd do it.

What Will Happen: Samoa Joe gets the pin and the win.

What Did Happen: Samoa Joe pinned Brother Ray for the victory. Man, I'm good.

That's it. For the record, I had three right and two wrong in the big matches this week -- nailing the main event. I should move to Vegas.

One other item before class wraps up: Make sure to download EPISODE 37 of "Old School, New School," the Professor Wrestling podcast. This week, my co-hosts Dr. Mike Lano and George Schire talk about the possibility of Congress investigating professional wrestling and its steroid problem. Other topics include Triple H's return, the greatest jobbers of all time and a new segment covering wrestling lingo. I call it "Language Arts Class." Give it a listen, you won't be disappointed.

That's it!

Class is dismissed!
