Free Time: Spring Fashion Preview

Preppy Styles Among Looks That Are In

UPDATED: 11:38 am EST March 9, 2007

One thing you can't say about this year's spring/summer fashion is that it's dull. In fact, this season is interestingly bipolar. While there are definitely some purposefully drab trends included, they're made remarkable by exciting add-ons and accessories.

On one hand -- or body, as it were -- you've got a return to 80s-inspired preppy looks, like the ones seen in that era's teensploitation movies in which those characters were named Blaine or Buffy. This look is heralded by tailored shorts, shirt-dresses and safe colors -- like black, white, muted pastels and a combo of the three.

Are you a flashier, bolder type who's yawning at this idea? Never fear -- you'll be excited by the intensely bold, modern colors and prints like fashionistas wore in the 60s, especially accented by a trend of shift dresses -- like the kind Twiggy wore -- vinyl slickers, trenches and swing-capes with huge buttons

"Spring/Summer 2007 is our season," said Shannon Schafer, a self-made fashionista and Old Navy's design director of womens' accessories. "Feminine dressing gets comfortable. Loose and flowing dresses are the big message this season. From easy T-shirt dresses to floating trapeze dresses in solids and prints, the message is relaxed. This figure-forgiving trend can be cinched at the high waist with a sash or stretch belt, and flats or ballets work best with this ultra-fem look."

Another way to really set off your look is to enhance it with something shiny or metallic -- whether that be a translucent silver button-up or decidedly loud jewelry or a trunk belt in gold or bronze leather. It's up to the wearer!

Again, as fashion likes to do, pants and skirts this season cling to either side of the spectrum. Toss aside the boot-cut jeans. Your lower half should be decorated with pieces that are tailored-yet-baggy or skin-suffocating. For once in quite a few seasons, wide-leg trousers are back to give the skinny jean a rest.

That's not to say, though, that the Audrey Hepburn ankle-huggers are going anywhere -- you'll see new twists on piles and piles of pairs -- like zippers down the leg -- at nearly every outfitter.

Top 10 Trends This Season:

1. Mod shift dresses
2. Metallics -- especially sheer or leather
3. White & Black
4. Tailored shorts
5. Wedges
6. Mod prints and colors (think 60s)
7. Preppy pastels
8. Wide-legged trousers
9. Futuristic cuts
10. High, round-toed heels

To recap:

Colors:: Black, white, combinations of black and white, tomato red, indigo, bright yellow, muted pastels and metallics
Patterns: Safari prints and mod prints
Fit: Ultra baggy or super form-fitting
Shoes: Wedges, ballerina flats and roundtoed high heels
