Some faculty members at Boston College are upset that the Catholic university has placed crucifixes in every classroom and other Christian artwork around campus.

NewsCenter 5’s Jarrod Holbrook reported school officials said they are just showing pride in the school's Jesuit tradition.

Biology professor Dan Kirschner, faculty adviser for BC's chapter of the Jewish student group Hillel, said the school is being "insensitive" to people of other faiths.

Maxim Shrayer, chairman of the Slavic and Eastern languages and literature department, calls the religious symbols "contrary to the letter and spirit of open intellectual discourse."

Some students at the Jesuit institution also questioned having the symbols appear around the campus.

“I don’t think it should be forced on every classroom,” said BC freshman Sagar Wagdaonkar. “I think teachers should get a little insight into whether they want it up or not.”

However, many students saw nothing wrong with placing the religious symbol in the school’s educational spaces.

“I don’t mind it,” said Amanda Proulx, a graduate student studying theology. “I think that it’s part of the identity of a Catholic school.”

School officials declined to be interviewed, but spokesman Jack Dunn replied in a written statement, “We ask only that those who do not share our faith tradition be respectful of our heritage.”

He said there have been no complaints from students, about 70 percent of whom are Catholic.
