Students and teachers in at least one central Massachusetts school district will be in the classroom on Saturdays after a storm closed school for nearly two weeks.

School OKs Saturday Classes

Officials at the Wachusett Regional School District approved a plan that allows school to be in session on March 7 and 21 -- both Saturdays. Classes have also been scheduled for March 20 and April 10 -- previously both days off for students.

The Wachusett Regional School District was closed for nine days after the Dec. 11 and 12 ice storm. If the school calendar was not changed, classes would be in session until July 2. With the revised calendar, the last day of school is set for June 26.

In the event of more school cancellations, classes will be held on April 4, May 2 -- both Saturdays. If needed, the district will push back the last day of classes until June 29 or 30.

Last month, state Education Commissioner Mitchell D. Chester said the state’s regulations require a 180-day school year and he would not issue any waivers until districts made significant efforts to change their schedules.
