Boston Harbor was the backdrop for a special lesson at the New England Aquarium.

NewsCenter 5's Bianca de la Garza reported that a group of female students got up close and personal with creatures they pulled from the waters below.

The Aquarium's Vickie Cataldo explained the goal.

"We're trying to foster excitement and a love of learning especially about marine issues. This activity shows them there are living things right outside their back door," Cataldo said.

Cataldo said it's important girls see women working in the field of science.

Teacher Jonathan Mihail, of the Mission Grammar School is Roxbury, brought his eighth-grade students. With no boys, he said it was a big difference.

"A lot of times, girls are held back in classroom when boys are around," he said.

He said it was unforgettable for the kids.

"One of my students got sprayed by plankton. You don't get sprayed by those things -- especially in the city," he said.

That student, 13-year-old Bianca Janvier, said she was "grossed out" by the experience.

"They had these things called tuna kits, and they were really squishy," student Shantive Jackson said.

Meanwhile, the boys who attend Mission Grammar were back at the school.

"The boys are enjoying a day with Sister Teresa", said Mihail.
