Extreme Home Makeover: Boston EditionPOSTED: 11:10 am EST February 24,
2005 BOSTON -- Another extreme home makeover will be taking place in Boston!Beginning Friday, Feb., 25 and continuing through Thursday, March 3, the Committee to End Elder Homelessness (CEEH) and WCVB-TV Channel 5 along with sponsor Sovereign Bank are partnering to renovate The Committee's first home for formerly homeless elders.Volunteers and donors from the community will work side-by-side to completely refurbish a new kitchen and revamp other living spaces throughout the historic Victorian home located on Bishop Street in Jamaica Plain. The house opened its doors in 1992 and became home to nine formerly homeless senior women. Three of those original residents still live there. Designed for communal living, residents share the kitchen and living room while enjoying the privacy of their own bedrooms. Major renovations include building a great room with furnishings provided by Jordan's Furniture, and home theater from KAM Appliances and Home Electronics, well as redesigning and enlarging the kitchen areas with new cabinets from Metropolitan Cabinet and Countertop and appliances from Sears. The first floor bathroom will get new fixtures from Peabody Supply."It is heartwarming to see the community coming together to lend a hand to those who need it most," beamed CEEH President and CEO Beth Babcock. According to a recent study by the McCormick Institute of UMass Boston, elders are the fastest growing population in Massachusetts shelters today. A census conducted by the city's Emergency Shelter Commission this past December showed 26 percent of individuals living on the street were 55 years or older. For over a decade CEEH has been developing an affordable supportive housing plan that is a national model. With over six sites housing 122 low income, frail and formerly homeless elderly men and women, the organization plans to add two more buildings in the next several years. The Extreme Makeover project will be featured in public service announcements as well as news segments in late February and early March. Conceived by Karen Holmes Ward, Channel 5's Director of Public Affairs and Community Affairs, NewsCenter 5's team of Ed Harding, Liz Brunner and Harvey Leonard will spearhead the station's February efforts. Many Channel 5 staffers, including Steve Sbraccia, Jorge Quiroga, Mary Saladna and longtime CEEH volunteer and board member Bob Halloran will join the effort.Paul La Camera, President and General Manager of Channel 5 added, "I'm heartened by the continued outpouring of support from businesses and organizations in the area. It's a wonderful coming together of talent and resources for such a unique and worthwhile project. Extreme Makeover is an example of Boston at its best."Donors for the Extreme Makeover: Boston Edition include: Sears/CambridgeSide, Jordan's Furniture, Kam Appliances and Home Electronics, Peabody Supply, Energy Bucks in partnership with KeySpan, Sovereign Bank, Suffolk Construction, CBT Architects, Com Ton Construction, ACS Heating and Air Conditioning, Duggan Plumbing, Metropolitan Cabinet and Countertop and Home Goods.
