We strategically tackle the most critical issues to create measurable differences in our region. We know that the way to make our region the best place for children in the country is to both strengthen the financial stability of their parents and ensure that kids get the nurturing support and educational opportunities that will prepare them for adulthood.Together, we can improve our quality of life.Our Impact Areas: One-third of Massachusetts children are exposed to risk factors* that threaten their development and subsequent success in schoolUnited Way served more than 22,000 young children through our partner agencies that provide early care and education, early intervention and family support programs that help ensure children are healthy, nurtured and ready to succeed when they enter school.Youth Impact While we know that a relationship with a caring adult is the most important factor in a youth’s success in school, there are more than 4,500 Massachusetts’ youth on a wait list to be matched with a mentor.United Way serves more than 90,000 youths through our partner agencies who provide the academic enrichment, leadership development, mentoring and career exploration that put teenagers on the road to opportunity.Housing Impact An estimated 20,000 Massachusetts children and 10,000 families experience homelessness.3United Way prevented homelessness for more than 15,000 at-risk individuals through affordable housing services and ended homelessness for 5,000 people through placement and support.We invested nearly $40 million in 2007. Through our partner agencies, we delivered services to over 2 million adults and children in our region.The Better Business Bureau recommends that operating expenses not exceed 35 percent of an organization’s overall budget.
