A Charlestown neighborhood was evacuated Thursday morning after a construction crew ruptured a gas line, Boston police said.

The gas line was breached at 38 Austin street about 8:30 a.m. An elderly housing complex and several homes were evacuated, Boston fire department spokesman Steve MacDonald said.

The evacuation involved a one block area. Police set up a staging area for emergency responders at Old Rutherford Avenue.

Traffic restrictions were put in place in the area.

The leak was controlled by National Grid crews after about an hour.
