Wednesday, July 8: On the Road/Lubec

POSTED: 2:00 pm EDT July 1, 2009
UPDATED: 12:45 pm EDT July 8, 2009

Peter Mehegan points the Old Chevy Downeast to Lubec, Maine, the easternmost town in the United States, and a jumping off point for Campobello Island, the former summer home of President Franklin Roosevelt. He discovers why outsiders are snapping up houses in town at bargain prices, and reports on the struggles of Lubec natives who've seen some 20 sardine and smoked herring factories close for good in recent decades. Peter also reports on the efforts to bring back wild salmon to the nearby Dennys River, and visits a neighboring town that's been nearly frozen in time.
