Wednesday, April 30: Diners with a Difference

POSTED: 12:42 pm EDT April 24, 2008
UPDATED: 5:49 pm EDT May 2, 2008

At a diner everybody is equal – and equally hungry - for the food Mom used to make: Salisbury steak, French toast, and American chop suey. But today the menu goes way beyond 50's nostalgia: would you believe a Gorgonzola omelet with ham and prunes, grits with pesto, veggie lasagna and Thai food? Tonight, Mary Richardson travels from Worcester to Somerville, Pawtucket to Lynn, in search of diners with a difference. She also meets a young entrepreneur who had to prove herself to the regulars when she bought into the business, samples some banana chocolate chip walnut pancakes, and discovers why one talk show host turned short order cook believes diners are the last refuge of true democracy.
