NCAA Game Summary - Arizona At Oregon State

Corvallis, OR -- Derek Anderson converted 21-of-32 pass
attempts for 308 yards and four touchdowns while leading the Oregon State
Beavers to a 52-23 victory over the Arizona Wildcats in Pac-10 action. Steve Jackson led Oregon State (6-3, 3-2 Pac-10) on the ground with 107 yards
and three scores off of 28 carries. Jackson also caught a touchdown pass and
finished the game with two receptions for 26 yards. James Newson led the Beavers' receiving corps with seven receptions for 100
yards and one score. Kris Heavner completed 12-of-28 pass attempts for 137 yards, two scores and
one interception for Arizona (1-8, 0-5). Michael Bell led the Wildcats with
106 yards and one touchdown on 25 carries. Ricky Williams was Heavner's main target, hauling in five passes for 65 yards
and one score. Jackson was on the receiving end of a 10-yard touchdown pass from Anderson
late in the opening quarter, giving the Beavers a 7-0 lead. Oregon State dominated the Wildcats in the second quarter, scoring 28 straight
points. Jackson ran for two scores in the period, both coming from two yards
out which extended the Beavers lead to 21-0. Anderson then tossed his second and third touchdown of the game, hitting
Newson with a 24-yard pass and Mike Hass with a four-yard strike, which gave
Oregon State the commanding 35-0 lead going into the break. The Beavers opened the second half with 10 straight points, as Kirk Yliniemi
nailed a 54-yard field goal early in the third quarter and Anderson found
Tim Euhus for a one-yard touchdown pass. Bell's 10-yard touchdown run midway through the third frame finally put the
Wildcats on the board, cutting their deficit to 45-7. Jackson scored his fourth touchdown of the game with a one yard run late in
the third quarter, extending the Beavers lead to 45 points. Arizona's defense added a safety late in the third quarter, cutting its
deficit to 52-9. Heavner's 27-yard touchdown pass to Williams and a nine-yard scoring strike to
Mike Jefferson in the final quarter were not enough for Arizona, as the
Wildcats fell by 29 points.
