GAME NOTES: The Tulsa Golden Hurricane will try to keep their Conference USA title hopes alive this weekend, as they do battle with the Marshall Thundering Herd at Edwards Stadium. The Hurricane enter the weekend in a three-way tie with Rice and Houston atop the West Division standings with just one game left in the regular season. With a win over Marshall and a Houston loss to Rice this weekend, Tulsa would advance to the C-USA championship game for a second straight season. If Houston prevails over Rice, then the Hurricane would just earn a share of the West Division title because the Cougars own the tie- breaker with their win over Tulsa on November 15th. With that said, Tulsa kept its title hopes alive with a 56-7 trouncing of Tulane last weekend. The victory put a stop to a two-game slide and improved the club to 9-2 overall and 6-1 within the league. As for Marshall, it was official eliminated from postseason contention following a 35-10 loss to Rice last weekend. It was the third straight loss by the Herd, which now sits at just 4-7 overall and 3-4 in the league. Marshall and Tulsa met for the first-ever time on the gridiron last season, with the Hurricane capturing a 38-31 victory. Offensively, Tulsa has been one of the most impressive teams in the nation this season, averaging a healthy 50.4 ppg behind a whopping 584.6 total ypg. The unit has had great success running (264.2 ypg) and throwing (320.5 ypg) the ball and has completed 59 percent of its third down chances. Last weekend, the Hurricane rolled up 593 total yards, including a eye-popping 489 on the ground, in a rout of Tulane. Tarrion Adams led the charge, as he rushed for a school-record 323 yards and a touchdown on 33 carries. With that effort, Adams has now gained 1,073 yards and six touchdowns on the ground this season. Quarterback David Johnson wasn't needed much with the success on the ground last weekend, but he still managed to throw for 104 yards and three touchdowns. It was a modest performance by Johnson, who has passed for 3,358 yards and 40 touchdowns on the year. He has done a nice job spreading out the ball, as four players have caught at least seven touchdowns this season. Brennan Marion is one of several talented targets and he leads the team with 962 receiving yards, to go with eight touchdowns. With the offense scoring at will, the Hurricane defense has had to spend a lot of time on the field and because of that, the unit is allowing 28.7 ppg and 397.3 total. The defense, though, has compensated for many of those yards by forcing 21 turnovers and recording an impressive 35 sacks. Tulsa is also coming off its best defensive effort of the season, limiting Tulane to just 232 total yards and one touchdown. The defense forced a pair of turnovers and came up with four sacks in the win. Mike Bryan posted eight stops and a sack in the victory, while James Lockett had seven stops and a sack. On the year, Bryan tops the roster with 93 stops and Lockett leads the way with 13.5 TFLs and 8.5 sacks. The Herd hasn't had that much success on offense, especially since it plays in a conference that is known for its high-powered attacks. Marshall is averaging just 19.2 ppg and 320.4 total ypg and has been slowed by mistakes, committing 22 turnovers. Last weekend, the Herd turned the ball over twice and gained just 268 total yards in a loss to Rice. Darius Marshall, though, was a bright spot, as he toted 24 times for 118 yards in the loss. He has enjoyed a rather successful campaign, rushing for 1,001 yards and five scores. Quarterback Mark Cann threw for just 83 yards and a score last weekend, as his struggles continued. For the year, Cann has passed for 1,767 yards, with 14 touchdowns against 13 interceptions. Darius Passmore has been his top target with 50 catches and 872 yards, while tight end Cody Slate has recorded 452 yards and a team-high eight scores in just nine games. Slate led the team with seven receptions for 37 yards and a score last weekend. Slowing down opposing clubs has been a problem at times for Marshall, which is giving up 26.7 ppg and 409.2 total ypg. The defense hasn't been able to stop the run (160.9 ypg) or pass (248.3 ypg) consistently and has come up with a modest 18 sacks. Last weekend, the Herd was torched for 456 total yards, including 315 passing, in a loss to Rice. The defense gave up 28 points after the break and allowed Rice to convert on 8-of-14 third down opportunities. Mario Harvey notched eight tackles in the loss, and he continues to lead the team with 91 stops and 4.5 sacks on the year. Tulsa still has a lot to play for and its high-powered offense will once again make the difference this weekend.
