POSTED: 12:38 pm EDT May 17, 2004

Former college football coach Dan Allen has died from complications of multiple chemical sensitivity syndrome. Allen was 48.

Allen took over at Holy Cross in 1996, but was fired after the team lost 10 straight games to close the 2003 season. He finished his tenure with a record of 26-63. In 2000, the Crusaders finished 7-4 for its first winning record in eight seasons.

Allen came to Holy Cross after turning around the football program at Boston University. In 1993, he guided the Terriers to a 12-1 record, marking the second-best turnaround in Division I-AA history.

He was 35-34 in six seasons at Boston University, including a 12-1 season in 1993 which earned him the Eddie Robinson Award as the NCAA Division I-AA national Coach of the Year.
