POSTED: 7:38 pm EDT October 31, 2009

(Sports Network) - Will Snyderwine kicked five field goals and the Duke Blue Devils added two late touchdowns to overcome the Virginia Cavaliers, 28-17, in ACC play at Scott Stadium.

Thaddeus Lewis threw for 343 yards and a touchdown for Duke (5-3, 3-1 ACC), which extended its winning streak to three games. Donovan Varner and Conner Vernon each hauled in seven passes, with Varner accumulating 113 receiving yards and Vernon finishing with 103 yards and a touchdown.

Jameel Sewell threw for a touchdown and ran for another for the Cavs (3-5, 2-2), who lost their second in a row, but he completed just 8-of-22 tosses for only 86 yards and an interception.

The first quarter saw Snyderwine hit a pair of field goals from 44 and 28 yards, respectively, to give Duke a 6-0 lead. He than added a 34-yard kick just seconds into the second quarter.

Virginia responded with a 33-yard field goal by Robert Randolph, but neither offense would be heard from again over the final 11-plus minutes of the first half.

The Cavs jumped out quickly in the third quarter and grabbed their first lead behind a one-yard touchdown plunge by Sewell.

Just over a minute into the final quarter, Snyderwine put Duke back on top with a 25-yard field goal

Virginia regained the lead quickly, as Sewell hooked up with Joe Torchia on a 19-yard scoring strike with just over 11 minutes to play.

The Blue Devils refused to go away and with just under four minutes to play, Lewis connected with Vernon on a 42-yard touchdown pass. The two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving Duke with a slim 18-17 edge.

It took Duke only 20 seconds to add to its lead, as Charlie Hatcher returned a fumble seven yards to paydirt. Snyderwine tacked on a 43-yard field goal with just over a minute left, securing the 28-17 win for the Blue Devils.

Duke outgained Virginia on the day, 424-196, including 343-107 through the air.
