NCAA Game Summary - Akron At Syracuse

POSTED: 8:04 pm EDT October 24, 2009

(Sports Network) - Delone Carter ran for 170 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Syracuse Orange to a 28-14 win over the Akron Zips in non-conference play at the Carrier Dome.

Carter carried the ball 30 times for the Orange (3-4) as they snapped a two- game slide, the team generating 234 yards on the ground on 46 attempts overall. Greg Paulus converted 12-of-17 passes for 105 yards as well.

The Zips (1-6), losers of five in a row and all six of their outings against members of the Football Bowl Subdivision this season, were paced by Patrick Nicely who converted 16-of-25 passes for 191 yards and a score, but the signal-caller was sacked five times on the afternoon.

Akron scored the only points of the first quarter as Nicely hit Andre Jones with an 11-yard TD pass.

The second quarter saw Carter record rushing touchdowns of seven and two yards to give the home team a 14-7 edge at the break.

The contest was knotted at 14-14 in the third when Dashan Miller returned the second-half kickoff 98 yards for a score.

Syracuse closed out the game with a Marcus Sales 11-yard TD catch from Paulus and Carter's four-yard rushing TD in the fourth to notch the much-needed victory.

The only win this season for Akron, who logged a mere nine first downs and 191 yards of offense, came in the second game of the season, a 41-0 romp over Morgan State at home.
