Santa Clara (2-1) At Pacific (2-0)
GAME NOTES: The Pacific Tigers welcome the Santa Clara Broncos to the Spanos Center tonight, as the two teams hook up as part of the West Coast Classic.
The Tigers were most recently in action this past Thursday, when they took on Northern Arizona. Unfortunately, the game wasn't able to be finished due to a power outage. There has been no time frame yet set for resuming the game, which NAU led, 45-43, with 8:50 left in the second half. The Tigers have grown accustomed to playing close games, defeating Pepperdine in double overtime, 67-64, prior to nipping San Diego, 56-55, Monday.
As for SCU, it is coming off its first loss of the game, dropping an 86-53 decision at San Diego State on Thursday. It was a dismal performance by the Broncos, who opened the season with victories over CS-Bakersfield (84-81) and Menlo (79-55).
The Broncos lead the head-to-head series with Pacific, 86-38, but the Tigers picked up a 63-57 victory in last season's meeting.
The Broncos shot a horrific 27.7 percent from the floor and committed 19 turnovers, resulting in an a lopsided loss at SDSU on Thursday. The team didn't do that good of a job on defense either, as SDSU was allowed to make 53.0 percent of its attempts from the floor. Niyi Harrison guided SCU in the loss with 14 points and seven boards off the bench, while Raymond Cowels and Marc Trasolini chipped in with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Leading scorer Kevin Foster was missing from the lineup, as he had academic obligations. That was obviously a big loss considering he had averaged 20.0 ppg over the team's first two games.
The Tigers last official game came against San Diego on Monday and Lavar Neufville's free throw with six seconds left lifted Pacific to a 56-55 win. It was a thrilling finish for Pacific, which could have made things a whole lot easier with a better performance at the charity stripe, going just 19-of-36 on the night. The Tigers had the same issue in the opening win over Pepperdine, connecting on just 9-of-21 free-throw attempts. Sam Willard led the team with 17 points and eight boards against San Diego, a nice follow up to his 13-point effort in the team's opener.
This one should go down to the wire and Pacific has shown it can win those type of games, so expect it to come out on top tonight.
