Northeastern (19-12) At Texas-El Paso (20-12)
GAME NOTES: Quarterfinal-round action of the CBI will take place at the Don Haskins Center tonight, as the Northeastern Huskies take on the Texas-El Paso Miners. The survivor of this bout will earn the right to play in Wednesday's semifinal round. The Huskies traveled across the country for their opening- round bout in this event and the trip was well worth it, as the team grabbed a 64-62 win at Wyoming on Tuesday. It was the first postseason victory since 1984 for Northeastern, which continued its tremendous play on the road. The Huskies own a an 11-6 mark as the visitor this season, so they won't be intimated by tonight's scene. As for UTEP, it was also involved in a nail-biter in the opening round, pulling off a 79-77 win over Nevada on Tuesday. The outcome helped the Miners reach the 20-win mark for the 22nd time in school history and the first sine 2006. Tonight's matchup represents the first-ever between UTEP and Northeastern on the hardwood.
The Huskies forced Wyoming in 15 turnovers, generating 20 points off those miscues in a narrow 64-62 win in the opening round on Tuesday. Northeastern shot 41.5 percent from the floor in the contest and hit nine three-pointers compared to just four by the Cowboys. Matt Janning led the charge with an all- around effort of 20 points, five boards and four steals. Chaisson Allen posted 16 points and six assists, while Nkem Ojougboh and Eugene Spates chipped in with 11 and 10 points, respectively. On the season, Janning tops the roster in scoring at 14.3 ppg and he also has 47 steals to his credit. Manny Adako is next with 11.3 ppg, but he missed last game with an injury and it listed as questionable for tonight. Allen adds 9.9 ppg and 5.1 rpg for the Huskies, who are holding opponents to a mere 59.9 ppg.
Stefon Jackson drained a jumper with 4.4 seconds remaining, lifting the Miners to a dramatic 79-77 win over Nevada in Tuesday's opening-round contest. Jackson finished the night with 26 points and five boards, while Randy Culpepper turned in 16 points and five rebounds off the bench. UTEP shot a solid 47.6 percent from the floor and went an even better 11-of-22 from long distance. The Miners are shooting just 31.9 percent from beyond the arc on the season, so their effort on Tuesday was a bit surprising. Jackson is the catalyst behind this attack, which is averaging 75.6 ppg, as he nets a healthy 24.3 ppg on the season. Culpepper has provided a nice complement to him and he comes in with 17.3 ppg and a team-high 60 steals.
The Miners have the luxury of hosting this bout and that, along with a big game from Jackson, should lead them over Northeastern tonight.
