Terrapins Trounce Fairfield

POSTED: 11:20 pm EST November 17, 2009

(Sports Network) - Eric Hayes finished with a team-high 14 points, as 25th-ranked Maryland hammered Fairfield, 71-42, at the Comcast Center.

Sean Mosley ended with 13 points and seven rebounds, while Landon Milbourne went for 10 points and eight boards for Maryland (2-0), which opened its season with an 89-51 beating of Charleston Southern on Friday.

"I was pleased with our defense tonight," Maryland head coach Gary Williams said. "I thought our defense kept us in the game. We're starting to get it, how hard you have to work to be a good defensive team. To be able to hold them to 28 percent (shooting) is good."

Derek Needham led all scorers with 15 points and Colin Nickerson had seven points for Fairfield (1-1), which got things started with a 67-58 besting of Central Connecticut State on Friday. Anthony Johnson had a game-best 14 rebounds to go along with four points.

Nickerson's layup nearly eight minutes into the contest gave Fairfield a surprising 12-7 lead, but it would be short-lived. Milbourne's jumper sparked a 15-0 Maryland burst and it led 22-12 with 6:02 left after Hayes three- pointer. The Terps were in front, 30-22, at the break.

In the second, Mosley finished off a 14-4 Maryland run to start the half, putting his squad up 44-26 with 13:44 remaining. Things would only get worse for Fairfield as its deficit increased to 20 at the midway point and the Terps cruised the rest of the way.

Game Notes

This was the first-ever meeting between Fairfield and Maryland on the hardwood...Maryland shot 43.1 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from three-point range. Fairfield shot a woeful 28.6 percent from the floor.
