GAME NOTES: The UNC Greensboro Spartans finally make their much-anticipated debut at the Greensboro Coliseum, as they welcome the 22nd-ranked Clemson Tigers to town for a non-conference affair.

The Spartans have made the move to the Greensboro Coliseum this season, as the venue is celebrating its 50th year. UNCG, which is closing out a three-game jaunt through the ACC, is hoping for some better luck on its new home floor. The Spartans opened the season with a 96-62 blasting at the hands of nationally-ranked Duke and followed that up with a 59-46 setback at Virginia Tech on Tuesday.

As for the Tigers, they usually get off to fast starts under Oliver Purnell and this year is no different, as they haven't really been tested in lopsided wins over Presbyterian (84-41) and Liberty (79-39).

This game represents just the second time that these two teams have squared off with one another. The first matchup was an 88-62 Clemson victory during the 1992-93 season.

Clemson has shown its superiority at both ends of the floor this season, with the result being a gaudy +41.5 scoring margin. The Tigers are shooting an effective .456 from the field, including .444 from behind the arc (24-of-54). That is only enhanced when the team is allowing the opposition to shoot a mere .330 overall, while owning the glass to the tune of a +16.5 rebounding edge. Clemson has really tightened the screws defensively, with 55 forced turnovers against the first two opponents. Most of the scoring has come from three starters, led by David Potter's 12.5 ppg. Trevor Booker is the key in the frontcourt though and the veteran forward is a double-double machine, currently averaging 11.5 points and 10.0 rebounds per outing. Tanner Smith adds 11.5 ppg as well thanks to a scorching .556 shooting. Potter and Booker led the way in the win at Liberty, as Potter hit five three-pointers en route to a game-high 17 points. Booker added 12 points to the cause, while grabbing the same number of rebounds. Smith chipped in with nine points, as did point guard Demontez Stitt.

The Spartans couldn't sustain their play over the course of the entire 40 minutes in Blacksburg and allowed the Hokies to outscore them 21-8 over the final 10+ minutes to claim a 13-point win at Cassell Coliseum on Tuesday. UNCG committed an unforgiving 23 turnovers in the game, that were turned into 28 Virginia Tech points. Mikko Koivisto and Kyle Randall led the team with 10 points apiece, but leading scorer Ben Stywall struggled, hitting just 3-of-9 shots en route to a six-point outing. UNCG shot just .353 from the floor overall and really had troubles in the second half, hitting just 7-of-24 from the floor (.292). Stywall is the only player averaging double figures after two games at 12.5 ppg. He is also the team's top rebounder (8.0 rpg). Randall (9.5 ppg) and Koivisto (9.0 ppg) have been adequate, but the scoring drops off significantly after that.

Without scoring depth, the Spartans have little hope of keeping this contest close. The Tigers have proven to be strong at both ends of the court and that should continue in this one.
