(21) Georgia Tech (2-1) Vs. Boston University (1-3)
GAME NOTES: The 21st-ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and Boston University Terriers will meet this afternoon in the final round of the Puerto Rico Tip- Off.
Georgia Tech has played three games this season, two of which have been victories. On Friday, the team bounced back from a four-point loss to Dayton on the first day of this event with a 70-62 win over Georgia Mason. The Yellow Jackets are members of the ACC, and they figure to be contenders for the league crowd thanks to plenty of returning talent.
Boston University lost its first three games of the campaign, so there wasn't much reason for confidence heading into Friday's clash with Indiana. Somehow, the Terriers found the toughness to get past the Hoosiers by a 71-67 final, and they will attempt to carry that momentum into today's tilt. Boston University is a member of the America East Conference, and victories over a Big Ten team and ACC team in succession would be a big deal.
The Yellow Jackets have won both previous meetings with the Terriers, and the teams haven't squared off since 1974.
Georgia Tech has played strong team defense through the first three games, as the team is limiting its opponents to 61.3 ppg on 38.1 percent shooting from the floor. At the offensive end, the Yellow Jackets are netting 76.3 ppg on 48.6 percent field goal efficiency. Gani Lawal leads the club with 14.3 ppg and 11.3 rpg, and his presence in the middle makes Tech formidable regardless of the opposition. Iman Shumpert checks in with 13.0 ppg, and Derrick Favors provides 12.7 ppg and 7.0 rpg. Against George Mason on Friday, Lawal and Favors both scored 18 points, and Lawal grabbed 14 rebounds as well. Shumpert scored 12 points for the Yellow Jackets, who missed 16 free throws and committed 17 turnovers. Fortunately, they earned a 45-35 rebounding advantage and limited the Patriots to 35.8 percent shooting from the floor.
Heading into Friday's clash with Indiana, Boston University had been outscored by an average of nearly 10 points by its previous three opponents. The Terriers shot just 29.3 percent from the field against IU and turned the ball over 16 times, stats that typically lead to defeat. Fortunately, they earned a 29-14 edge in points from the foul line and a 52-32 rebounding advantage, the two most obvious keys to victory. John Holland carried an average of 20.3 ppg into that clash, and he exceeded that mark with 21 points to pace BU. Jake O'Brien tallied 14 points and 13 rebounds in 37 minutes of action, while Tyler Morris had 13 points and five assists in 38 minutes.
Boston University won't go quietly, but a loss to Georgia Tech is likely. The Terriers won't be able to contend with Lawal on the inside.
