NCAA Game Summary - Boston University At Notre Dame

POSTED: 9:34 pm EST December 13, 2008

(Sports Network) - Luke Harangody logged 23 points, 15 rebounds and five assists, while Ryan Ayers hit the go-ahead three-pointer down the stretch, as No. 12 Notre Dame barely extended the nation's second- longest home winning streak with a 74-67 squeaker over Boston University.

Kyle McAlarney finished with four three-pointers en route to 16 points for the Fighting Irish (7-2), who surprisingly needed a late run to win their 41st straight game at the Joyce Center. Ayers added 10 points for Notre Dame, which was coming off a loss to Ohio State last weekend.

Corey Lowe also hit four from long range for a team-high 19 points for Boston University (5-4), which had won two of three coming into the game. John Holland recorded 15 points and nine rebounds in defeat.

Boston held a slim lead for most of the second half until McAlarney sunk a three to put the Fighting Irish in front 62-61 with five minutes to play.

The lead remained one until Lowe was true from behind the arc for a 66-64 Boston lead with 3:25 to play. McAlarney, though, drained a three of his own to take the lead back on the ensuing possession.

The Terriers' Jake O'Brien made 1-of-2 at the line to tie the game at the two- minutes mark, but Ayers drilled Notre Dame's eighth three to make it a 70-67 game.

O'Brien came down and missed a jumper, and McAlarney made two free throws at the other end. Lowe was also off the mark from long range, and the Notre Dame faithful breathed a sigh of relief, as the Irish escaped the upset bid.

Nine straight Boston points gave the underdogs a 15-5 lead five minutes into the game. Notre Dame inched back, and Jonathan Peoples nailed a three to put the Irish ahead 27-26 around the two-minute mark, but the Terriers scored the final seven points of the half to forge ahead at the break.

Seven in a row from Notre Dame capped by McAlarney's three gave Notre Dame its first lead at the second half, 43-42, with 13:54 to play, and the game was back-and-forth from there.

Game Notes:

Notre Dame has won all three meetings against Boston University...Tyler Morris scored 12 points for the Terriers, while Zach Hillesland wound up with 11 points for the Irish, who were outrebounded 44-37...Notre Dame shot 44.1 percent from the field and only turned the ball over seven times, compared to Boston's 36.9 percent shooting and 10 turnovers.
