Northern Iowa (2-1) Vs. Boston College (3-1)
GAME NOTES: A couple of teams trying to close out the annual Paradise Jam in St. Thomas on a high note collide in the final round of the event this afternoon, as the Boston College Eagles and the Northern Iowa Panthers meet for the first-time ever.
Boston College landed in the islands with a perfect 2-0 mark, but then the team was defeated by Saint Joseph's by a score of 84-80 on Friday. Saturday saw the Eagles bounce back and claim a hard-fought 75-58 triumph against South Dakota State.
As for the Panthers, they arrived at the tournament following a 71-65 win against Denver as their only previous action on the young 2009-10 campaign. The squad's first action in the event resulted in a 60-52 loss to DePaul, but like the Eagles, UNI rebounded with a 74-68 win against East Carolina two days ago.
UNI's Adam Koch lit up the scoreboard with his game-high 25 points in the victory against East Carolina on Saturday. Koch was a perfect 5-of-5 from three-point range, yet converted just 6-of-9 at the free-throw line where no one was allowed to get a hand in his face. Jordan Eglseder chipped in 19 points and handled the action on the inside with his 10 rebounds. Fellow starters Kwadzo Ahelegbe and Johnny Moran both chipped in nine points and combined for seven assists. The team has had a different leading scorer in every game thus far, leaving Koch as the high man overall with his 15.7 ppg, even though he is averaging just 24 minutes per contest. Eglseder accounts for 11.0 ppg and is also first on the glass with 9.3 rpg, but he too is being used rather judiciously with just over 22 minutes per game on the floor. If there is one area in which the Panthers badly need to improve it is perimeter defense because at the moment opponents are hitting three-point attempts at a 47.9 percent clip.
Except for Reggie Jackson who shot only 3-of-12 from the field and finished with eight points, to go along with his six assists and five rebounds, every starter for the Eagles hit for double figures in the win against the Jackrabbits over the weekend. Joe Trapani was the high man with 21 points, shooting 5-of-6 behind the three-point line, followed by Biko Paris with 16 points and Corey Raji and Josh Southern with 12 apiece. The team shot an impressive 53.7 percent from the floor and an even better 11-of-20 out on the perimeter, which was more than enough to make up for a lackluster 6-of-14 effort at the free-throw line. Boston College sports five players averaging double figures these days, headed by Trapani with his 16.3 ppg. He and Jackson (14.8 ppg) also lead the unit on the glass with seven and a half rebounds per outing, allowing BC to hold a staggering 11.2 rpg advantage over the competition through four games.
Northern Iowa should be a much better team this season given how many starters have returned, but the Panthers might not have enough fight in the paint where Boston College seems to dominate.
