T-C-U (2-0) At Arizona State (2-0)
GAME NOTES: The Arizona State Sun Devils shoot for their third straight win to start the season, as they welcome the TCU Horned Frogs to Wells-Fargo Arena as part of the NIT Season Tip-Off Tournament.
ASU, which is scheduled to play San Francisco on Friday in Tempe, took care of Western Illinois in the season opener last week with an 87-35 rout and then topped Texas State in first-round action of this event on Monday, 84-62.
As for the Horned Frogs, they too are off to a 2-0 start to the 2009-10 campaign, thanks to a 74-69 defeat of Mid-American Christian last week and an 83-65 triumph against Cal State Northridge last night in this tournament.
As far as the all-time series between these two teams is concerned, the Horned Frogs are ahead by a count of 2-1, thanks to a 96-78 win in back in 1986.
The winner of this meeting will head to New York City next week to continue in the tournament.
Zvonko Buljan had a monster effort for the Horned Frogs on Monday as he posted 14 points and a game-high 17 rebounds to help push the team to a 43-38 advantage on the glass in the win against Cal State Northridge. Handling much of the scoring was Edvinas Ruzgas who knocked down 5-of-10 shots behind the three-point line to come up with a game-high 24 points, followed by Ronnie Moss and Keion Mitchem with 17 and 12 points, respectively. Were it not for an unsightly 23 turnovers, the win would have been even more one-sided. Moss leads the team in scoring after two games with his 21.5 ppg and has a team- best 11 assists, but even though the squad has played a couple of weaker opponents, somehow the Frogs still have more turnovers (38) than assists (33), something that will have to be straightened out if they hope to be competitive against Arizona State tonight.
Limiting Texas State to only nine field goals in the first half was just the first step as the Sun Devils took care of the visitors with a 22-point decision yesterday. Derek Glasser accounted for a team-best 20 points, four assists, four steals and three rebounds for the squad, followed by Trent Lockett who came off the bench to tally 17 points and seven boards. Coming up a rebound shy of a double-double was Eric Boateng as he tallied 14 points, while Ty Abbott dropped in 11 points in only 14 minutes off the bench. While it is still very early in the season, it is a good sign to see that the Sun Devils have as many as five players averaging double-digit points right now. Boateng is on that list with his 11.5 ppg and has also paced the team with his nine rebounds per contest. Glasser comes in with 15.0 ppg as a 57.1 percent shooter from the field who is also a perfect 11-of-11 at the free-throw line. In two games ASU has taken nearly twice as many free throws (66-34) as the opposition.
Playing on the road in front of a hostile crowd and having trouble handling the ball are two strikes against the Horned Frogs in this meeting.
