More Tourists Ask About Environmental Credentials

When tourists visit the Boston area during the winter they usually see white, but more and more tourists are seeing green in the places they stay.

NewsCenter 5's David Brown reported Wednesday that more area hotels are going green as a way of luring tourists and helping the bottom line.

Jury's Hotel General Manager Stephen Johnston wanted to save money on utilities, so he swapped out all the light bulbs for energy-efficient compact fluorescent lights. He also installed high-tech, low flow faucets. It saved the hotel thousands while luring more tourists.

"We're finding that every week that passes we are getting a few more callers who are asking about our environmental credentials before they decide whether or not to stay with us," Johnston said.

It was the reason the Seaport starting going green. Some conventioneers wouldn't stay at the hotel unless it became more environmentally friendly. That prompted the hotel to install state-of-the-art composters. Tons of hotel food waste is now turned into an easily disposable liquid.

The Comfort Inn in Revere has been green all along. It was built on a reclaimed landfill. Compressed natural gas vans shuttle guests to Logan International Airport. An ozone system reduces water and electricity for the laundry. The pool uses no chemicals, instead keeping it clean with an ionization process.

"We buy enough renewable energy to offset the carbon that the hotel is still producing, and so you can stay here without negative impact on global climate change," Saunders Hotel Group's Tedd Saunders said.
