Paul Hamm Confirmed For Olympic Team

POSTED: 6:55 pm EDT July 19, 2008

(Sports Network) - American gymnast Paul Hamm had his spot on the U.S. Olympic team confirmed Saturday, after demonstrating competitive readiness during preparation camp.

Hamm suffered a broken bone in his right hand on May 22 at the Visa Championships in Houston. He was named to the Olympic team on June 21, pending his ability to show that he could be competitive in Beijing.

Saturday, Hamm did that and will get the chance to defend the gold medal he won in the all-around competition at the Athens Olympics in 2004.

"Paul has been able to participate fully at our nine-day team preparation camp. In addition, the men's selection committee observed Paul perform routines on events critical to team success during the intrasquad meet," said Dennis McIntyre, senior director of men's program for USA Gymnastics. "Based on his training and routines, Paul has demonstrated his competitive readiness to our satisfaction. We believe Paul's contributions to the team will help us in our quest for a spot on the medals podium."

Hamm will be going to his third Olympic Games, having also competed in 2000.
