Parents Need To Prepare For New School Year

Parents Should Be Familiar With Child's School

Getting ready for a new school year isn't just a job for kids -- it also requires parents to be prepared.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, parents can help ready their child for the new school year by conveying to him or her why learning is important, that is something your family values, and helping them develop a positive attitude toward school.

Parents also have another task -- to make sure they are knowledgeable about their son or daughter's school.

The U.S. Department of Education suggests that parents be familiar with the school's handbook and to even ask the principal and teachers key questions, including:

  • What teaching methods are used, and are the educational materials up to date?

  • How much time is spent on the core subjects of reading, math, science and history?

  • How does the school measure each student's progress and what testing methods are used?

  • Does the school meet the state's standards and guidelines?

  • Are the teachers qualified and do they meet the state's requirements?

  • The U.S. Department of Education also recommends that parents know how their child's school ranks compared to other schools in the state.
