President Barack Obama's election to the presidency was a historic moment in this country.

NewsCenter 5's Liz Brunner reported that David Plouffe was the architect behind that campaign. He's now hoping to use that same magic to help Gov. Deval Patrick win re-election.

"When we first got into this, one, we didn't think he was going to run, and secondly, we were very clear how unlikely all this was. Beating Hillary Clinton seemed almost an impossibility," Plouffe said.

But all of those things did happen, and Plouffe lived it all.

"How did you know how to run this campaign? There was no blueprint," Brunner said.

"No. That's probably why we were successful, because a lot of times people get into races and there's some kind of dusty playbook about how you're supposed to do it, and we didn't do that at all," Plouffe said. "We had to make it up as we go along."

Plouffe's newly-released book, "The Audacity to Win," is his personal account of the unprecedented strategies used -- a grassroots movement that took the Internet by storm.

"We all spend an enormous amount of time in digital world, and so we wanted to build a campaign that allowed people to live their campaign life the same as the rest of their lives," Plouffe said.

Plouffe is now onto his next campaign, advising Patrick on his re-election bid. Given the latest poll results that indicate 56 percent of voters think it's time to elect someone new, Plouffe has a tough road ahead of him.

"Listen, I think governors all across the country are right now, you know, facing difficult races because when the economy is like this, people are right to be impatient," he said.

"What are you trying to do to help get Gov. Patrick re-elected?" Brunner asked.

"A campaign allows you to tell your side of the story. I have a lot of confidence in him as a leader," he said. "I would never rule Deval Patrick out."
