VIDEO: ER Doctors Issue Text Messaging Concerns In a world of unlimited text messaging, people can send text messages from anywhere, while doing anything."I used to use my Black Berry while driving," said Steve Lowe, one of several Americans who have multi-tasked while texting. "It's definitely dangerous."But though Lowe said he doesn't do it anymore, there are some still guilty of texting while trying to do something else. Now, more and more emergency room doctors are warning against the bad habit. The American College of Emergency Medicine has noticed an increase in the number of accidents in which teens and young adults hurt themselves by texting while driving, walking, or even exercising."It's going to be dangerous for you and the people around you because you're not focusing," said Dr. Eileen Keneck, a pediatric emergency room physician at Boston Medical Center. "It can range anything from a simple sprained ankle, to lacerations, to massive head injuries."Last July, a car accident in New York killed five teenagers. Police said that the young driver sent a text message seconds before the crash."Texting takes your attention away even more than being on the cell phone," Keneck said.A 2007 study by AAA found 46 percent of 16- and 17-year-old drivers admitted text messaging while behind the wheel. But it's not just teens; the same study showed the most accidents happen with people age 19-26.Several states have passed bans against texting while behind the wheel while others, such as Massachusetts, are considering bills penalize driving while texting, or DWT."It's really a concern for everybody," Keneck said.
