The Medford native who took on the obesity epidemic is on a new journey. Gary Marino's film, 'Million Calorie March,' premiered in Boston this week. NewsCenter 5's Liz Brunner reported on his story.

“I was 397 pounds, or as I like to say, a Super Bowl party away from 400 pounds,” said Gary Marino, the man behind the 'Million Calorie March' in 2004.

When Marino realized he was dangerously overweight, he hired a team of health professionals and began turning his life around.

“I lost 110 pounds,” Marino said.

At that point, he was determined to tackle the obesity epidemic head-on.

“I didn't do the walk to lose weight; it was a side effect of it. It was really for awareness and to raise money,” Marino said.

He walked 1,200 miles from Florida to Boston. Cameras captured the good and the bad.

“Walking through the south was a real eye opener, because barbecue really isn't for breakfast anymore,” Marino said. “You saw the obesity problem right up close.”

Marino is sharing his journey on the big screen. His film is fittingly titled 'Million Calorie March.' The premiere was this week in Boston, a few steps from his hometown of Medford.

“We've put obesity out there in a very different way, a very unique way. It's educational, it's inspirational, but it's also a funny film,” Marino said.

Marino lost a total of 150 pounds and has kept most of it off. But he admits it has not been easy for him, and it never will be.

“My struggle didn't end when I lost the 150 pounds. It didn't end when I got to the end here in Boston. It's a lifelong struggle and that's really what the message of the film is,” Marino said.
