Losing your hair can be devastating under any circumstance.

NewsCenter 5's Heather Unruh reported Tuesday that a local doctor is offering a new hair solution and hope.

"Looking in the mirror every day, knowing how you lost your hair, it was the toughest part," said John Mangan, who underwent the Triple-Flap Procedure.

The Station nightclub fire left Mangan with severe scars inside and out. After the fire, he always wore a hat to cover up his burns and his bald spot.

"It was just all scar tissue," he said.

But he is becoming more comfortable in his own skin with help from Dr. Mark DiStefano.

"The whole top of his head, which had been a skin graft, it had no hair whatsoever," DiStefano said.

DiStefano performed the Triple-Flap Procedure on Mangan as part as Operation Restore -- a program that helps people who lost their hair.

"It really is a life-changing procedure. It's something where someone who thought they could not have hair could have hair," DiStefano said.

The procedure is catching on in the United States.

"We're using an extender inside, and it's a device which actually pulls the hair baring skin up and squeezes the bald skin so we're able to cover a large area," DiStefano said.

Some say that the results are impressive. The procedure actually rearranged the hair on Mangan's head, giving him a very natural-looking head of hair.

"Now when you look at the back of his hair, his hair is all going in the right directions, so instead of going like this, his hair now goes like everybody else's," DiStefano said.

The procedure is not for everyone. Ideal candidates are over 35 and need to have hair loss in the crown. It can take two to three surgeries before a person will see results.

But for Mangan, it's been worth it in so many ways.

"I smile every day," he said.

The procedure can cost anywhere from $7,000 to $10,000, and it's not always covered by insurance.
